In any one year, two in five Australians aging between 16 to 85 are experiencing or developing a mental health condition, is very common. This forms the approximately the 8.6 million of Australians. In 2022 National Survey of Mental Health and wellbeing survey outlined that most common form of mental conditions are anxiety, affective or mood disorders, and substance use disorders. Mental illnesses ranked as the second biggest source of disease burden in Australia.

Mental health condition affects an individual’s emotional state, thinking, behaviour and interaction with their families, friends, colleagues and the community. Not everyone living with mental health condition will be diagnosed. This could cause the individual loss of home, loss of income, social isolation from the family, friends and community, and poor physical health and wellbeing. Lack of knowledge, and awareness in mental health illnesses, scare of discrimination and isolation may cause individuals to avoid seeking help, and treatment early.
