Work Health and Committees (WHSC) is an integral part of a business’s health and safety system and facilitate meaningful and constructive communication between employees and management.

The aim of the WHS Committees is to ensure that workers point of views on health and safety matters are heard provides a forum for management and workers together to find and resolve health and safety issues, and to develop and monitor safe systems and procedure.

There is no specific course of training for Health and Safety Committee members, however to comply with the consultation process the employer would need ensure their Committee members were suitably trained to perform their functions.

Health and Safety Committees (WHSC): What do they do?

In order to help make a workplace a safe and healthy place to work, a Health and Safety Committee is made up of both workers and managers to provide a forum for consultation on matters related to health and safety in their workplace. This is done to make a safe and healthy environment in the workplace.

In what ways does a Health and Safety Committee function?

In an effort to ensure compliance with the WHS legal requirements and facilitate a safe and healthy work environment, managers and supervisors play a very important role in helping to achieve compliance with these requirements.

There is a key component of this role that involves the aspect of involving workers and others in your workplace in the process of WHS consultation. Consultation is a very worthwhile and satisfying part of this role. Managers and Supervisors are responsible for facilitating a two-way dialogue between themselves and the workers that they are responsible for, as well as anyone else who could be affected by the activities that are taking place within their area of responsibility.

The goal of a Health and Safety Committee is to ensure that those safety measures that they agree upon are implemented and approved by management in a way that:

  • Encourage co-operation between those conducting an enterprise or business and their workers to devise, develop, and enforce health and safety measures designed to ensure the health and safety of workers, and
  • It is important for the management to be involved in the development of standards, rules, and procedures relating to health and safety that are to be followed or complied with in the workplace and
  • Performing any other functions that may be prescribed by the regulations or agreed between the person conducting the business or undertaking and the Health and Safety Committee from time to time.
