When you think about first aid, the first thing that comes to mind is CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation. CPR is a defining characteristic of first aid, though not the only essential skill in emergency care. It is used in conditions where breathing is obstructed or heart activity is irregular, hence the name cardiopulmonary. Of all the aspects of first aid (first aid course), this may be the most intimidating, but with adequate training and proper certification, you will be prepared for life and death scenarios.
There are a lot of considerations when it comes to CPR. It is not a one-size-fits-all shirt. For instance, the CPR training which you get to rescue adults is not the same as that which you get to rescue children and infants. Firefighters and other professional emergency responders are trained on an all-inclusive CPR for both adults and children. On the other hand, healthcare providers such as doctors and nurses are trained with CPR using high-technology equipment, for a broader audience and a variety of medical emergencies. These training are given on Levels A, B, C, and HCP certification, respectively.
We always start with the basics. Below we listed a few things you need to keep in mind when learning CPR.
4 Rules to Remember When Giving Emergency CPR
Emergency response sequence - The general rule is to dial triple zero and ask for help before giving CPR. It is recommended so help will be on its way while you deliver first aid. However, the rules are reversed for children. This is because children are more responsive to immediate CPR, and thus survive better compared to adults. These are the standard sequence for when you are alone with the patient. If another person is around, they can make the call while you resuscitate the patient.
Initial assessment and positioning - Make sure the patient is lying flat on their back with their chin raised and head tilted back. This position allows you to tap for consciousness, assess their breathing, check for block airway, and provide CPR with the best results.
Breaths and compressions - The resuscitation process is made up of two things: breaths and compressions. Always remember that the ratio is 30 compressions to 2 breaths. You start with compressions followed by rescue breaths for a more effective CPR. For some people who are not confident with their skills, compression-only CPR can be delivered at a rate of 100 compressions per minute.
Compression depth - That standard is 2 inches or 5 centimeters deep in the middle of the patient’s chest. However, you need to size up the patient because everyone has varying body build. According to the American Heart Association, the compression should be one-third of the patient’s chest depth.
