Work-Life Balance Tips and How-To’s

“Going the extra mile” is a phrase that is commonly thrown around in hustle culture. This may even be a reason why many employees bring work home.

Don’t get us wrong! Doing more than what you were tasked to do outside your working hours is an awesome trait. It shows a strength of character and a dedication for the work that you do– two of the things successful people in business have in common.

However, this begs the question: “how far is too far?”. Where do you draw the line?

How much work is beneficial for your career and how much more before you experience fatigue and burnout?

If you’re here reading this article now, then you’ve probably recognized this problem in yourself and you’re looking for ways to strike a harmonious balance between work and personal life.

We get you and we hear you, so we prepared 4 tips on how you can care for your mental health all the while giving your best performance at work.

Unplugging during rest days. Even the most hard-working machines need rest to prolong their power and performance. The same goes for you. It’s essential to acknowledge that you’re not invincible; that downtime is part of your productivity routine. So, dedicate your weekends to yourself. Use it to allow your body to recover from all the hard grinding you did during the workweek.

Spending time with loved ones. Your workmates make a good support system, but it’s also important to develop connections that aren’t associated with completing tasks. Spending time with close friends and family is  the hallmark of work-life balance because it is reminiscent of a social environment that has no hint of stress and pressure.

Setting boundaries. While there’s no harm to helping others, your mental health may be at cost when you neglect to set boundaries. This means communicating your free hours to others and the extent to which you can assist them. Of course, it’s not enough to say it. You must also follow through. Make it a point to set automated emails stating the reasons why you can’t attend your phone at the moment and the time you will be back to answer queries.

Adopting better methods to manage stress and fatigue. Work-life balance is also a self-care routine. Sure, it’s best illustrated as a weekend or beyond 9-5 thing, but you can also incorporate it into daily activities. For instance, taking your coffee and lunch breaks. Doing so will allow you to unwind, refocus, and ultimately keep stress at bay.

Who would have thought that something as basic as work-life balance could be quite the challenge? Workaholics, we’re looking at you!
